K-3 Nurturing Program
Nurturing Round 1
Round 1 of Nurturing Lessons kicked off throughout the county in August. During nurturing lessons, students learn about and practice critical thinking skills using the PETS program. View the list below to see the thinking skill each grade level focused on and a brief description of each grade level’s activity.
K- Nurturing Lessons begin in February. Kindergarten students will get an introduction to critical thinking skills and get the chance to meet the PETS characters and learn about their different thinking skills such Visual, Creative and Logical.
1st- 1st grade students are working on Creative Thinking skills by drawing and turning bubbles into a creative picture!
2nd-2nd grade students are prepping to take the CogAT test in 3rd quarter. AIG Leads spent the first 3 rounds of nurturing lessons going over test prep and introducing them to pictorial and number analogies and relationships that they will see on the test. Students then got to practice their skills in review format with games we all know and love like Jenga and Connect 4!
3rd-3rd grade students spent their first 3 lessons learning about verbal, figural and numeral analogies. They will take the cogAT in the fall of 2024. Students then got to practice their skills in a review format with a student favorite Quizizz!

4th/5th Grade Enrichment Pull Out
Modified Pull Out
AIG students in grades 4-5 will participate in a modified pull-out group(s) according to their area of identification. Students may be served in the areas of reading, math, and/or intellectual giftedness (IG). Parents received a letter from the AIG Area Lead Teacher explaining this opportunity. Please find below a brief explanation for each group.
Reading:
This year students are working to make connections around word meaning and practice in depth critical analysis of text. Students are working on the text The Eleventh Hour to solve a mystery. This text involves inferencing with text and illustrations and uses critical thinking to solve codes and ciphers.
Math: This year students are working to develop and practice critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of new concepts, such as algebra, real world examples and to draw logical conclusions. Students are working on 3 Act Tasks which is an activity that shows students parts of a problem and they have to figure out the missing piece based on what is shown. Students are also working on an introduction to algebra through the Hands on Equations program. This program offers a hands on and concrete approach to learning algebra.
Intellectually Gifted (IG):
Students who receive IG support scored in the 96th percentile or above on an aptitude screener. IG students often benefit from problem-solving and collaborating with peers. This year, IG students are working to learn what it means to be an effective team member in a group. Students are learning to work through their strengths and challenges as they are put in team or group situations and scenarios. Students have worked on Tangler puzzles, which offer a fun way for students to work together to solve a problem.
*At the end of the year, students will participate in a school and/or district-based culminating event.
