      School Health Advisory Council & Wellness Policy

      • School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group composed of individuals selected primarily from the health and education segments of the community. SHAC provides advice to Rowan-Salisbury School System on aspects of the school health programs. Our SHAC works in conjunction with Healthy Rowan.  The council is authorized to examine related research and laws, assess student needs and the current school environment, review existing board policies and administrative regulations, collaborate with appropriate community agencies and organizations, and help raise awareness about student health issues.

         

        Healthy Rowan/SHAC meets on 4th Thursday of the month at 2:00 pm.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Healthy Rowan/School Health Advisory Council, please contact our Director of Student & Family Health at 704-630-6033.

      Homebound Regular Education

      • Rowan-Salisbury School System provides a program of instruction to support school-aged students who are unable to attend classes due to injury or illness. This article provides an overview of the program and how to apply.

        Rowan-Salisbury School System provides a program of instruction to support school-aged students who are unable to attend classes due to injury or illness. To be eligible to receive homebound instruction a student must be or is anticipated to be absent for ten (10) days in a row or more and the doctor caring for them must substantiate their need during this time.

        Students must be enrolled in a Rowan-Salisbury School System public school to be eligible. Students receiving homebound support remain enrolled in their assigned school. Books and assignments are provided by the assigned school, and all work is returned to the assigned school for grading and credit.

        Homebound services will be reviewed every thirty (30) days. The school system reserves the right to request updated medical information when determining whether homebound services need to be extended.

        It is important to note that Homebound is a temporary service for students with health issues preventing school attendance.  Homebound program does not offer a full comprehensive range of courses and as a result a student may be unable to complete all requirements for graduation while on homebound.

          • Required Vaccines for all Students - Kindergarten through 12th grade

            • DTP/DtaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis): Five doses
              • The last dose must be after the fourth birthday If the 4th dose is given on or after the 4th birthday, the fifth dose is not required
            • Polio (IPV): Four doses
              • If the third dose is given on or after the fourth birthday, a forth dose is not required
            • HIB (Haemophilus Influenza Type b: If child is 5 or older, HIb is not required.
            • Hepatitis B: Three doses
              • The last dose of the vaccine series shall not be administered prior to 24 weeks of age.
            • MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
            • Measles: Two doses Separated by at lease 30 days. 1st dose on or after 1st birthday

            Vaccines Required for Students Entering 7th Grade after July 1, 2015

            • Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis): One dose for student who have not previously received it
            • MCV (Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine): One dose
