Coins for Canines

On November 16th, Shive Elementary students were overjoyed when five of the six Rowan County K-9 Unit police dogs came to visit. The well-mannered canines and their handlers were invited to Shive to be presented with a check that exceeded $750.00. This money was donated by students during Shive’s Coins for Canines Campaign that coincided with Red Ribbon Week. Throughout the week, students dropped coins into their grades’ buckets. At the end of the week, Shive’s first graders came out on top with second grade closely behind. According to Mrs. Gillis, Shive’s school counselor and Coins for Canines organizer, the purpose of the campaign was to contribute to the K-9 program so that the canines and their handlers can continue to do the fantastic job they do in Rowan County.
